These will take place select Sunday mornings. \nAll individuals with Autism and their families are invited to Attend this event. Free of Charge! \nChildren must be accompanied by an adult who must remain in the facility for the event duration. \nPlease enter the North-East pool deck doors and note that these are not the typical entrance doors to the facility. DESCRIPTION:REGISTRATION IS FULL AND IS NOW CLOSED – Thank you for your interest. \nTuesday\, December 9\, 2014  12:30pm – Registration begins\, 1-5pm –  Conference \nThe Autism Society of Iowa is pleased to present a free half day conference featuring keynote speaker\, Dennis Debbaudt\, who will be presenting on Autism Risk and Safety Management. This event is valuable for any person on the spectrum\, caregiver\, family member\, and anyone interested in the safety of those with autism spectrum disorders. \nThis conference will assist individuals on how to Create a Safety Plan for a Person with an Autism Spectrum Disorder and Autism and the Decision to Drive. \nRegardless of impairment\, a police encounter is always a possibility. Information provided from law enforcement shows that 35% of people on the autism spectrum become victims and 25% will interact with first responders or law enforcement. This is an increasingly hot topic as the population of person’s with ASD have had numerous and sometimes disastrous encounters. \nIn addition\, information will be shared on recent changes regarding Iowa DOT and the Medical Alert designation. We will conclude our day with refreshments and social time to visit with other caregivers and local law enforcement. \nThis training is in conjunction with the Iowa State Sheriffs and Deputy Association (ISSDA). They are holding their three day winter school in Des Moines on December 8-10th. In the 1980’s\, he wrote for the Detroit News and worked with network television current affairs programs in the U.S.\, Canada and United Kingdom. \nA professional investigator and journalist since 1977\, Dennis turned his attention to autism spectrum conditions in 1987 after his son was diagnosed with autism.  His first report Avoiding Unfortunate Situations was published in 1994. He’s since authored over 30 articles\, books and chapters including Autism\, Advocates and Law Enforcement Professionals: Recognizing and Reducing Risk Situations for People with Autism Spectrum Disorders for Jessica Kingsley Publishers\, London UK (2002)\, Contact with Individuals with Autism: Effective Resolutions for the FBI Law Enforcement Bulletin (Debbaudt & Rothman\, 2001)\, Patients with Autism and Other High Risks for the Journal of Healthcare Protection Management (2009)\, Autism in the Criminal Justice System (Taylor\, Mesibov & Debbaudt\, 2009) and Autism: Managing Police Field Contacts – Training Key 678\, International Association of Chiefs of Police\, June\, 2013. \nAs managing partner of Debbaudt Legacy Productions\, LLC\, Dennis produced and wrote the scripts for the training videos Autism & Law Enforcement Roll Call Briefing (2004)\, Autism\, Fire-Rescue and Emergency Medical Services Video (2009) and Autism in the Criminal Justice System (2009). Over the past 18 years\, Debbaudt has trained and developed training materials for law enforcement\, first response and criminal justice professionals throughout the United States\, and Canada and in Australia\, Iceland\, New Zealand and United Kingdom.  Dennis lives in Port St. Lucie\, Florida with his wife\, Gay\, and son\, Brad. \nFor more information please visit his websites\, www.autismriskmanagement.com and www.debbaudtlegacy.com.
