Tuesday, December 9, 2014  12:30pm – Registration begins, 1-5pm –  Conference

The Autism Society of Iowa is pleased to present a free half day conference featuring keynote speaker, Dennis Debbaudt, who will be presenting on Autism Risk and Safety Management. This event is valuable for any person on the spectrum, caregiver, family member, and anyone interested in the safety of those with autism spectrum disorders.

This conference will assist individuals on how to Create a Safety Plan for a Person with an Autism Spectrum Disorder and Autism and the Decision to Drive.

Regardless of impairment, a police encounter is always a possibility. Information provided from law enforcement shows that 35% of people on the autism spectrum become victims and 25% will interact with first responders or law enforcement. This is an increasingly hot topic as the population of person’s with ASD have had numerous and sometimes disastrous encounters.

In addition, information will be shared on recent changes regarding Iowa DOT and the Medical Alert designation. We will conclude our day with refreshments and social time to visit with other caregivers and local law enforcement.

This training is in conjunction with the Iowa State Sheriffs and Deputy Association (ISSDA). They are holding their three day winter school in Des Moines on December 8-10th. Dennis will be doing Law Enforcement training in the morning of the 9th as part of their mandatory mental health continuing education training.
